Julian Simon

ArtForm: Workshop Panellist

Spiracle Management was conceived by Julian Simon in March 2003, after a successful career as a session drummer and performer with STOMP – highlights which included a sell-out run at The Festival Hall and two end-of-tour performances at The Acropolis, Athens.

Julian wanted to maintain his creative pursuits in the music industry, but on a more commerce orientated level. Having obtained a business studies degree whilst at university, it was time to put that knowledge to good use.

"I was always interested in the business side of the music industry, so it was a natural route to take. I'd already had lots of hands-on experience, working with good and frankly awful managers as an artist; so all those experiences played a major part in my development."

He initially cut his teeth working as an agent for Soundtrack Music, which represented film music composers both in the UK and US. During this period, Julian was approached by Dan Films to music supervise on a movie starring Edward and Amelia Fox, where he gained invaluable experience, licensing tracks from major record and publishing companies.

The film also enabled him to work with a host of recording artists, both 'up and coming' and established – So the seeds were sown; Artist Management beckoned.

After an inordinate period of time researching, attending creative management courses and seminars, Julian finally took the plunge with hip hop artist, Aphletik who in their first year together won the prestigious Diesel U Music Award for Best Urban Act 2004.
This success has been swiftly followed with Aphletik supporting the cream of Hip Hop, namely Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monche, The Pharcyde and Slum Village, as well as collaborating on a 'breathtaking' track with 2004 Mercury Prize nominee, TY.

Julian also received the MMF / Music Week Award, for best newcomer manager 2004, culminating in a bursary to attend Midem 2005…He now also manages Superstüdio and Vashti.
