ArtForm: CityShowcase Act/Composer

29 is an exciting and fresh sounding new band whose core members formed at North London's City and Islington college in the summer of 2002.

The original members consisted of Joel Lewis on drums, Ty Sebastien on bass, Louis Essuman on keys, Jonathan Vears on guitar, George Dobson on the decks and Chasney Maturine and on vocals. Enthusiasm in the band was high with all the members being under the age of 22 and soon the band began to write eclectic and funky hip hop songs.

The name of the band was derived from the bus that the band members used to use to get home from their college. Several names were considered but this was eventually considered the most fitting. 29's first major gig was a set at Peace Day 2002 in Camden Lock. This was an event celebrating world peace day and was covered in the local press.

By this time the band had gained a new member in the shape of rapper Skanda. It was around this time that 29 began building up a relationship with the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm and the Weekend Arts College in North London.

After several performances 29 have a strong fan base in the North London area. During the summer of 2004, 29 have performed at several events including Domain Music's charity event at Ocean, Jam by the Lock at Lock17, Camden and the CM showcase at Metro in Tottenham Court Road. 29's current line-up boasts 10 members with a saxophonist and singer the newest additions.

Later this year 29 hope to record a demo and make a video to promote themselves further a field in London. 29's style defies classification, spanning hip-hop, soul, funk, rock and reggae. Their live set features poetry, break dancing, excellent musicianship and generally a feeling that the band is enjoying themselves while on stage.
